If you want someone to stay, give them a place to hang their hat. Make space for them that is warm and inviting. Make time for them, and give them the opportunity to be heard and to feel needed. Display their strengths and accomplishments on your wall. Store their weaknesses and failures in a back room or send them off to Goodwill to be sorted by someone with clearer vision does or doesn’t have value. Be glad to see them–every time and in every circumstance–and reveal it with a smile that flows from your eyes. Say their name out loud as if it’s your favorite song title. Never let them doubt that they matter. Make them wonder why in the world they would ever consider going somewhere else. If they want you to stay, they’ll do the same for you. Do it for them regardless.
