Those jutting rocks that make you stumble and lift your feet high on the way up serve as footholds on the way down.

I’ve been thinking about legacies. About how simple and beautiful and direct they can be. About how we might be born to sing one song or write one letter or preach one sermon or simply have one conversation that somehow lives on and changes the world, and how all our agonizing about the endless day-to-day details might be for nothing in light of our simple but eternal legacy in having lived one very important moment well.

It’s possible to be addicted to any number of things. Food, relationships, music, routines. Addiction prevents you from thinking and freely making newly-informed decisions. Addictions make you unable to respond to the needs of the moment without thinking of loss to self. It defines gain in the negative. Love, devotion, and commitment are thinking, freeing processes. They leave room to live and breathe, to accomplish good things, and to live lives of joy, service, and good health–lives free from fear and worry. Faith is the antidote to addiction. It sometimes wrenches from our hands those things we think we can’t live without but that are destroying us physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. The wrenching is painful, but in the end we’re thankful.

Cynicism is not synonymous with enlightenment. "Enlightenment" that causes us to regard others as unenlightened idiots tends to be mistaken for education when it is, perhaps, the worst kind of darkness.

Be curious and amazed. They're two of the most attractive qualities in a human being. It's not just the way to see beauty. It's the way to create it.

If there’s no listening, there’s no learning. Conversation is as much an opportunity to humbly and honestly examine one’s views as it is to defend them. Wisdom generally increases with discomfort—the kind of discomfort avoided by silencing, ignoring, or ridiculing others. Squelching, eye-rolling, denigrating, and cold-shouldering are neither virtues nor signs of deep, studied conviction on a given topic. They’re indications of fear and acts of bullying.
